Loretto School lies in the town of Musselburgh on the edge of the Firth of Forth. Here Lorettonian boys and girls from 8 to 18 have the freedom of 80 acres of lawns, trees and playing fields whilst being close to the main A1, only 6 miles from Edinburgh and less than half an hour's drive from Edinburgh Airport.
Scotland's oldest independent boarding school, Loretto's distinctive ethos and atmosphere are moulded by its unusual history and its willingness to stick by its convictions. Deliberately small, Loretto allows each pupil to be known individually by fellow pupils and by staff. The Junior School and the Senior School are small enough for the whole school to meet daily together: the idea of the school as a big family is achievable. Loretto seeks to foster the partnership between pupil, school and family.
The school has developed steadily over the years to meet the changing requirements of contemporary education. Specially designed boarding houses, a modern theatre, a study library, a sports hall, squash courts and a music school have all been a part of that development.
An impression of the buildings and grounds may be had from the prospectus. However, a visit to the school for a discussion with the Headmaster, followed by a tour of the facilities with present pupils is needed to gain an insight into the special and happy atmosphere of Loretto.
